To celebrate the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns
Lets have a quick history lesson
Donkey Kong was first released in 1981 and was the game that put Nintendo on the Map. The game starred a huge gorilla and a young Mario out to save the girl by climbing ladders and missing barrels.
The game was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and at this point it included Mario (4 years before the release of Super Mario Brothers), he was simply known as Jumpman. Somehow Super Jumpman Brothers does not seem to have the same ring to it.
There are a number of stories circulating as to why the creator Shigeru Miyamoto called the game Donkey Kong. To be honest, none of these stories have been backed up and only Shigeru knows the reason why the game is called Donkey Kong. I am not gong to get into these reasons, as to why the game was called Donkey Kong as this is supposed to be a history lesson and I just remembered how boring I found history at school.
Now back to the history lesson, two sequels were released to the original game Donky Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3 . The game was very successful in the game and watch series. These were Nintendo ‘s first hand held games device, each hand held having a single game. And it have been used on many different gaming platforms, including the Game Boy.
The gameplay was very addictive and simple and turned Nintendo into a huge company. Without the iconic Donkey Kong there would be no Mario Brothers, Nintendo Gameboy or Wii.
There have been a number of official games. And spin offs from Donkey Kong. The franchise was dormant for a number of years until the release of Donkey Kong Country which was both a commercial and critical success.
Now I bet you are wondering why I am getting so starry eyed regarding this game. Well it was a cool game, unlike a lot of the games released today, with flashy graphics and no gameplay.
Like I said earlier the influence Donkey Kong had over the video games industry was massive. Would there be a Mario? Or Nintendo? Or even a Sonic? Without Donkey Kong.
Now I am not a middle age nerd, harkening back to the ice ages for a game I remembered that is better that it was. Donkey Kong was a massive hit all over the world and spawned a number of spin offs.
Retro is cool, So is Donkey Kong and the Video Game Shirts
